- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2017pull the trigger on this laptop. I just returned my new HP which was price the same but had a i-3 processor instead of i-5. The new HP laptop are made from cheap plastic.I did a quick reboot on my hp laptop and the computer never came back on it was just a black screen. HP sucks. this lap top has a smooth finish almost feels metal. and smooth mouse and better speakers. also better keyboard than hp and very thin professional look and feel. pull the trigger!!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2018Wonderful laptop for my daughter. The quality of this machine isn't quite what I expected, though it adequate for the price. The screen hinge is too tight and catches and releases when opening. Also, the keys aren't solid and soft feeling, but more cheap and "clicky" sounding.
But it works great and is a great price, so I'm happy.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2018I bought it for my girlfriend since the laptop she had stopped working on her
the laptop is still working very well a few months later
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2017I bought this for my mom and the problems started immediately. First, one of the keys on the keyboard broke off. So we had it exchanged for a brand new one. Then 4 months later the screen wouldn't turn on. We sent it back, they repaired it. Then right around when the warranty was about to expire, it started to crash constantly. Nothing but one problem after another.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2017In general I like the overall feel and lightness of the machine. I'll list out a few dislikes.
The keyboard – I've been a proficient touch typist for decades and I'm used to a full width shift keys on both sides of the keyboard. In their infinite wisdom Lenovo decided to make the shift key on the right side half sized and next to the shift key is the up arrow key. This has been maddening because I tend to keep hitting the up arrow when intending to shift which makes a mess of what I'm doing. I've developed such a 'phobia' about this now that I must look down at the keyboard and deliberately plant my little finger on the shift key. Is this the fault of the machine? No, one can see this in the pictures. I just never thought of looking at it or considering the implications. Sure, eventually I'll get used to it, but would trade this keyboard in a second, in fact I would have moved on to another machine with a standard shift key on the right instead. Hindsight is 20-20 indeed, but without question would have caused me to disregard this machine. It's that annoying to me. I've owned more than 10 laptops in my career, and usually adjust to the differences quickly. I seem to be having trouble getting past this one.
Wireless speed degrade – I have Dir655 Hardware Version: B1 Firmware Version: 2.11NA Wireless router. The laptop that the Lenovo is replacing had a 802.11n wireless adapter in it and it ran at 140m. The lenovo has a 802.11A wireless adapter and will run no faster than 65m. That's only 10m faster than a 802.11g... I did download the latest win10 driver for this adapter just recently, but the upgrade did nothing to increase the performance of the connection speed. I suppose if I want network performance like I had on my old laptop, I'll have to upgrade my router to one that supports 802.11A..
Backing up full disk image – This is a hot button for me because I lost my last laptop, the one this new laptop is replacing to a disk corruption, and I did not have a disk image to restore the machine with. I now have a good NAS with plenty of storage for not only hard disk images, but also live dynamic backing up of file changes on the computers sharing the network. My problem with this machine is that it comes with a built in backup utility that is both accessible from the boot time Novo button menu for purposes of disk restoration, and an application called, “OneKey Recovery” in windows 10.. I consider this utility to be totally useless because it WILL NOT back up to a network drive, nor will it restore in the bios from a network drive. It will only allow interaction with a local hardrive which doesn't have a spare partition in it large enough to hold the image data when the machine is new and has minimal software loaded. The other option is that you can back up to a USB connected drive. If you want to use this utility you're going to have to purchase an external drive with enough storage space to hold all the data. In testing the utility on the brand new machine with nothing loaded, I found that it took most of the day to run when connected to a USB connected external drive.
Backing up full disk image Part 2 – Not to be thwarted by the useless disk imaging utility that comes with the laptop, I moved on to a product that I've been using for years, and that's Clonezilla. Clonezilla boots from a CD or USB interfaced drive or stick. I realize that the following is meant as a safety feature but in order to be able to boot to something other than the hard drive it requires getting into the bios and changing some settings to allow booting to a DVD/CD or USB drive. I spent some time on the internet trying to learn the secret key combination to boot up to a bios / boot selection screen. None of the suggestions that people had would work for me. Perhaps the bios can be changed to allow for using keys to get to the bios, but you still have to get their at least the first time. No key combinations worked. You'll read about the 'Novo button', and find lots of suggestions on where to find it. Here's where looking at the manual that comes with your particular Lenovo idealpad comes in handy because they're not all the same. Mine is located on the left side of the machine right between the speakers plug and the memory card slot. It's a pin sized hole with a button inside. You'll need a thin paper clip to be able to press the button. Press and hold the button during power-up to get the Novo button Menu.
Backing up full disk image Part 3 – Once you get the Novo button menu (finally) you'll have a selection called Boot menu.. If you select that option and then select the CD/DVD for booting you'll get an error message that reads “EFI DVD/CDrom has been blocked by current security policy”.. You'll need to reboot with your Novo button pressed again and this time select “Bios setup” go to Boot, and change the Boot Mode, and Boot priority settings to Legacy support, and Legacy first. Save the settings and reboot, again holding in the Novo button. This time you'll be able to select booting to the DVD/CD and have it actually work.
Backing up full disk image Part 4 – Clonezilla cloned the drive with no issues to my NAS. Once completed I thought it might be good extra protection to return the boot settings in the bios to their original settings. After manually changing the two settings back to where they were, I was still able to boot to the DVD/CDrom drive (huh?)... Using the Fn+F9 key to return the bios settings to default returned the protection from booting on the DVD/CDrom to where it was to begin with... Is this a feature or a bug? This may begin to seem like a novel, but if you're interested in running something like Clonzilla (or some other disk cloning software that requires booting separate from the hard drive) this story may save you some hours.
Ethernet cable (rj45) connection. This may catch you off guard. Like a number of things with this machine, it's very irritating until you understand what you have to do. Looking at the connection port you'll see there is no way to directly plug the cable in because it's too small. At first I wondered if I needed to remove the plastic clip.. Youtube showed me the way. You must first put the lower part (clip) of your connector into the slot and press down a little bit and the connector will slide right in. It pushes the clip down and out of the way just enough to get the connector in.
My last complaint is not really related to the computer itself, but to windows 10. I've been a windows 7 user for years and it's rock solid for me. This is my first win 10 machine and I find it somewhat buggy. You have to ask the machine to do things twice sometimes. The machine will hang for no apparent reason with a little blue spinning wait mouse pointer.. Reminds me of the hour glass in windows 95... I won't go over the list of things that causes the lag or freeze up to happen, but it happens when doing what used to be normal activities on my older machine. Soon after starting to use the machine the latest service pack did install... on it's own.. Thanks Microsoft...One thing I'm not crazy about with win 10 is that the OS seems to own the user, and not the other way around as I for one think it should be. Richard Stallman would have a heart attack.
*** Review update 2018 - Feb - 15 Dropping my rating from 3 to 2 stars ***
I should have added this to my review back in November of 2017 when it started happening which would have marked 11 months of very steady use, less than one year. - All of a sudden the CPU fan started to get very noisy. It was sounding a lot like a leaf blower... I had been using a vacuum cleaner to try and pull dirt out through the bottom grid of the fan intake all along but it doesn't help much. It's hard to get at the fan exhaust port because it's on the back of the base right in front of the pivot for the display. You can't really get at it.
I carefully took the laptop apart and it did have a fair amount of dirt in the fan. I carefully vacuumed out the dirt around and in the blades of the fan until it was spotless. After putting it back together the noise was a little better, but due to what appears to be wear on the bearing in the fan, it rattles when it runs. The sound can be maddening.
Checking with Lenovo, the laptop is still under warranty and I can send it to them to get the fan replaced. This is my working machine and I need it every day, plus I don't trust sending it anywhere too many opportunities for it to get lost or damaged. Will they send me a new fan so that I can replace it myself? NO!
So what am I faced with? I can buy a replacement fan off of Ebay. New? No way. All the fans I can find there are used.
Who sells a brand new replacement fan for this unit? I don't know. I can' find anyone who sells it. Can I cross reference the part number to something else that will work? No idea, I can't find any information on that.
Bottom line? I'm stuck unless I sent it to Lenovo which is not going to happen.
Less than a year on the cooling fan folks. When the fan starts getting unbearably loud. I have to pick up the machine and carefully tip it to one side or the other until it quiets down to some degree and carefully set it back down. I cannot express to you how much I hate this laptop.
As a matter of comparison I have a couple of IBM T42 laptops and the CPU fans are around 15 years old. These have been regular working machines that traveled, and were used almost every day. They've been through a lot. I've cleaned out the fans a number of times due to dirt accumulation, and the original fans are still running fine, and SILENTLY!! There's no excuse for this, Lenovo.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2017I have what I asked for, but I was hoping it was a little faster. I have a dell that is a few years older and it’s hardware is also older but it seems about the same speed if not faster. I bought my dell in 2010.
