Celia the Pyrenean Ibex, Karolina Dema , Colour Pencil & Drawing Cut-Out on Paper, 21 x 29.7. cm, 2022 A series of A4 drawings by Karolina Dema, the Brink focuses on animals on the verge of extinction. Dema’s series reflects on what is lost versus what is passed on, hopefully slowing down the process of mass extinction by spending visual time with each endangered species. The Brink questions humanity’s self-designated role as Earth’s gardener, reflecting on its ability to classify the living as much as its shortcomings in keeping it alive. The Brink is also an attempt at visual journalism, each drawing captioned by a headline, with the source mentioned below it. Created by artists in India, a herd of life-sized elephants is making its way across the globe to call attention to and promote coexistence between humans and animals. “The Great Elephant Migration” features 100 animals made from the wood of Lantana Camara, one of the world’s top invasive weeds which has driven wildlife out of their forest homes into urban areas leading to an increase in human-wildlife conflict. It's got to be a TikTok/reel/short selling you junk these days surely, terrible idea! Heck I'm not even a writer, who does this?! To me, long form media needs to make a return and so does the internet of old, you know, the one with humans in, and people writing about niches, (the stuff 'AI' companies stole, for their role-the-dice chat bots). We're losing the internet to AI, bots, SEO slop and clickbait. So here's a blog about my local river, the wildlife I photograph around it - observations and a little rambling. It's a couple of minutes reading, is it going to win awards, no? But did a human write it? Yup! Do I sell anything? Nope! Can you spend an imagined moment being by the river, watching wildlife? Yes! 📸 Last week’s wildlife photography shoot was absolutely thrilling, and I’m already counting down the days until I can immerse myself in nature again! There’s something deeply captivating about observing wildlife up close, especially the brilliant European Greenfinch. These birds are mesmerizing, with their vibrant colors and lively personalities—it’s impossible not to be drawn to them. European Greenfinches are not only beautiful but fascinating creatures. Here are a few interesting facts about them: 📍The males have that striking green-yellow hue, which not only makes them visually stunning but also serves as a form of camouflage amid green foliage. Their colors help them blend in with leaves and branches, keeping them safe from predators. 📍Greenfinches have a powerful beak designed specifically for cracking seeds. They’re especially known for their fondness for sunflower and other oil-rich seeds, making them regulars at garden feeders during colder months. 📍Males perform a unique “butterfly flight” to attract mates, singing a beautiful, whirring song as they flutter in mid-air. It’s a sight to see and hear—aerial acrobatics with a musical twist! Hope everyone’s having a wonderful Monday evening. WWF’s Living Planet Report 2024 estimates that we have lost 73% of all vertebrate wildlife populations since 1970. That’s nearly three-quarters of all birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fish. Gone in just 50 years. During that time, our population has more than doubled, increasing from 3.7 billion to over 8.1 billion today. This is unsustainable phenomenon. Currently, over half the Sustainable Development Goals targets for 2030 will be missed. Humans use over 40% of habitable land for food production. Crop production accounts for 70% of freshwater use. And the entire food sector is responsible for over a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions. Continued global population growth places even more pressure to intensify and expand agriculture causing further nature loss. More people need ever more space. Damaging human activity continues to encroach on natural environments, with humans expected to expand into 50% more land by 2070 – increasing human-wildlife conflict and nature loss. These are some of the salient features of the Living Planet Report 2024.

Female photographers are not as good as male photographers. At least that's what German magazine editors and companies who hire us seem to believe. The numbers speak for themselves: Female photographers earn 30% less than their male counterparts. Moreover, 82% of all magazine covers are shot by male photographers. 82%!!! 🤯 But there are things that we can and that we must change: 1. Hire female photographers for the job, duh! 2. Pay women more, across the board, just do it. Close that gap. 3. Represent more women photographers in commercial agencies. Whenever I scroll these agency website, I predominantly see 🙍♂️ 🙋♂️ 🙎♂️ 4. Teach female creatives how to price themselves (better) and how to (always) ask for more money. Oh, and when they ask, how about we give it to them? I'm personally part of Female Photoclub – a network that supports female photographers and I know that herspective photographers do the same. But we all need to do more. For example: If you happen to know a photo editor at a magazine, or somebody high up in an advertising agency, or somebody who takes decisions on who to spend that precious marketing budget on – make them aware, maybe even use this post. Because… We can't do this alone. We all need a little help from a friend. And if you are one of the decision makers – commit to giving female photographers a leg up. It can't be that hard.
