Eddington Discovery Day
Saturday 15th June 2019 10:00am - 4:00pm
Location: Storey’s Field Centre
Cambridge’s newest district, Eddington, is hosting a day of free activities at the Eddington Discovery Day.
Children, families and people of all ages can drop in for between 10am – 4pm and have a go at activities including badge making, art and crafts, storytelling, beeswax wrap making and toy swaps. Plus a Soup Disco where you can cook, dance and get a free lunch!
Test your pedal power with smoothie bikes, a pedal powered jukebox and have a go at riding different pedal powered machines.
Learn about helping the environment through recycling and reducing plastics, carbon reduction and healthy travel at stalls, talks and tours.
Getting to Eddington
Visitors are encouraged to walk, cycle or use public transport to reach Eddington where possible. Only limited parking is available – alternatively use the Madingley Road Park and Ride.

Soup Disco – hands-on cookery and music fun
Get chopping and peeling surplus food to create a healthy meal. Disco Soup is a fun way to bring people together and help address the issue of food waste. You can cook, dance and get a free lunch!
Workshops at 11:30am and 12:30pm.
Toy Swap – trade, repair and build
Most toys are made from non-recyclable plastics and end up being thrown in the bin. Bring your toys to this exchange and swap for another, or if you have a broken toy we can try to fix it.

- Build your own toy/toy art – use olds toys and other parts to create your own new toy or piece of toy artwork – 10am – 4pm

Art and crafts
Create your own sculpture or piece of art from things normally thrown in the bin or left around the house. The City Council’s Children and Young People’s Participation Service (CHYPPS) will be leading a drop-in session all day.
BeeBee Wrap pouch making – help reduce plastics
Fold your own pouch from a BeeBee Wrap, a natural and reusable food wrap made from beeswax and organic cotton printed with contemporary designs. The wraps replace the need for throw-away clingfilm and plastic bags. Drop in all day.
Woodcraft Folk – games and craft
Badge making throughout the day, plus a number of outdoor games to join in with. Woodcraft Folk is a movement for children and young people to help explore the world through games, crafts, drama, debates and outdoor activities.

Storytelling – reading and workshop
Author Claire Culliford is bringing environmental storytime for 3-7 year olds to Eddington, with her book: “Hector Helps Clean Up The Park”. Come along and find out how looking after the environment, and each other, can be lots of fun!

UN Environment World Conservation Monitoring Centre – conservation information from the local team
The UN Environment World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) confront the challenges faced by nature. Members of the team will be explaining the work they do to place biodiversity at the heart of environment and development decision-making.

Energy Centre tour – low carbon energy system explained
The homes in Eddington do not have individual boilers but instead link to the energy centre via a district heating network which provides heating and hot water across the entire site. Join this behind the scenes tour to see the engineering of the energy centre. Tours last approx. 50 mins. Please book using the links below.

Search for mini-beasts with the Museum of Zoology
Discover the wildlife that lives on our Cambridge doorstep by helping Museum of Zoology volunteers to search for mini-beasts at Eddington. Pop-by throughout the day to see what we find as we uncover the diversity of small creatures that call our green spaces home. All wildlife caught will be released at the end of the day.
Suitable for all ages, particularly families working together.
Cycling activities
Cycling event experts Outspoken will be bringing their cycling fun, games and information to Eddington all day including:
- Have a go bike show – A great way to get people excited about bikes in a relaxed off-road environment. Try out different and unusual bikes including recumbents, karts, tandems, cargo bikes, mini folders and electric bikes!
- Pedal powered Scalextric – Using bikes to control and power the cars around the track. Going head-to-head, riders need skill as well as power to win the race and top the leader board.
- Smoothie bikes – Have a go on the smoothie bike to blend your own free, healthy smoothie using nothing but pedal power!
- Dr Bike repairs – Free cycle maintenance session where qualified bike mechanics will repair your bike.
- Pedal powered jukebox – We provide the bikes, speakers and music and you provide the power -getting pedalling and enjoy the music!
- Cycle sprint challenge – Riders go head-to-head on static racing bikes. Pedal as fast as possible over a simulated 200m to get to the top of the leader board.

Information and advice from the Cambridge Cycling Campaign who work to represent the views of cyclists in Cambridge and help create a healthy, sustainable and congestion-free city.
Bird spotting at Brook Leys
Can you find all the birds around Brook Leys lake? Pick up a worksheet from the Mears team, take a walk to the lake, find the birds and learn more about when and why they visit Eddington. Show the team how you got on and win a prize.
University of Cambridge Environment & Energy team – information and advice
The Environment and Energy team will help you to look at your environmental impact with some interactive games – and will be explaining how they support staff and students to make a positive impact.
Greater Cambridge Shared Waste Service and Mears
Information and guidance from two of the teams helping to make Eddington more sustainable. Learn how the large underground bin system supports recycling and waste management. Plus advice and information about composting, food waste and what bin items should go in.
