TINO: The Father of Australian Karate Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 3 ratings

From Hawaii to the heart of Australia, this is the untold story of a martial arts legend.
Tino Ceberano—karate master, US Marine, and pioneer—didn’t just teach Goju-ryu karate. He built a movement, changed lives, and became the father of Australian karate.

Born in Hawaii and shaped by the fierce discipline of the US Marines, Tino trained under the legendary Gogen Yamaguchi Hanshi—“The Cat” of Goju Kai. With that fire in his spirit, he brought karate to Australian soil, forging a path for generations of martial artists.

More than a fighter, Tino was a builder of people. His powerful voice, larger-than-life presence, and deep belief in human potential made him unforgettable. Whether teaching in a dojo or lifting someone’s spirit, he lived by the Hawaiian spirit of Ohana—treating all as family.

This is the inspiring journey of a man who broke barriers, lived with fierce integrity, and always gave that "last drop in the tank."
His message is timeless: Believe in yourself. Don’t give up. You can do it.

There will never be another Tino Ceberano.

Dr Michael Black has interests in the martial arts, sailing and playing music. He trains Goju-ryu karate at IGK Victoria in North Balwyn and highly values the positive role of regular martial arts training to the mind and body. This is the first book he has co-authored, joining well known martial arts master Tino Ceberano Hanshi from Brisbane, Australia.

After starting karate training in 1971 at the Goju Kai North Balwyn dojo Michael finally earned his brown belt fifty years later in the same dojo. Inspired by his first Sensei, he embarked writing Tino Ceberano Hanshi's life story. It took five years to learn about the many adventures of his Sensei but he was determined to create a lasting legacy and archive the historical journey of bringing Goju Kai karate to Australia from Hawaii and building one of the largest karate clubs in Melbourne of the era.

Michael and Tino Ceberano Hanshi co-authored the book, launching it in Sept 2022 in Melbourne, Australia and travelling to Western Australia, Newcastle, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Toowoomba to market it and conduct book launches. The book has been welcomed and hailed as an important record of Australian martial arts history. Anyone with an interest in Goju-Ryu karate will find this book a fascinating read. It was published as Tino Ceberano Hanshi turned 81 years of age.
