Airtightness, Vapour Control & Breathability

Authored by Mark Lynn, ASBP Vice- Chair & MD of Eden Renewables, and peer reviewed by members of the ASBP’s Natural Fibre Insulation Group.

This paper is part of a series of industry briefing papers aimed at generating a greater understanding of the roles, capabilities and related issues concerning natural fibre insulation (NFI). In doing this, we hope to enable industry to deliver better buildings designed to take advantage of the significant building performance benefits of NFIs.

Airtightness, vapour control and breathability play a critical role in the operational performance of buildings. Understanding how they work together enables us to control air leakage, maximise energy efficiency, optimise indoor air quality and ensures durability of the building fabric.

If you're in Conwy over the weekend of October 25th to 27th then be sure to visit GWLEDD CONWY FEAST, an unforgettable celebration of food, drink, art and music from Wales. ASBP Awards 2020

ASBP Awards 2020 - Still time to enter

There is still time to get your entry in for The 2020 ASBP Awards, sponsored by Thermafleece, Cleveland Steel and Tubes, Steico,  and UK Hempcrete.

Returning for 2019/20 following a successful inaugural year. The exciting awards programme recognises construction projects that exemplify excellence in sustainability through their products, design and delivery.

This year, the ASBP Awards judges are again looking for exemplary sustainable building projects that excel across the “Six Pillars”, with a particular focus on:

Building products – Particular products essential to the success of the project, with evidence of their performance.
Measured performance – Measured performance data for the project and explanation of what the results show.
Replicability/buildability – Design and construction approaches utilised on the project that have potential for replicability and adoption at scale.
Lessons learned – Lessons learned from the project and what could be done differently.

The awards are free to enter and open to construction projects, both new-build and retrofit, from across the UK built environment sector that were completed by July 2019. Interested entrants can see full entry criteria, FAQs and submit their project for free until 30th September 2019 via the ASBP website.
And Finally:
The climate emergency requires us to change our behaviour; what we consume as well as how, when, where and why we consume things.

We must replace harmful behaviour with helpful behaviour.  Carbon offsetting compensates and excuses harmful behaviour, it doesn’t promote helpful behaviour.  It’s a bit like saying it’s OK to park on double yellow lines as long as you are happy to pay the parking fine.

We can’t look at climate change as a simple 1 minus 1 equals zero equation when it comes to carbon or anything else.  The arithmetic is much more complex.

In a world of finite and scarce resources, diverting any effort to offsetting harmful behaviour can’t be acceptable.  Rather, the answer is to somehow change how we behave towards our valuable and finite resources. - Mark Lynn
