Do I need to be tech savvy to use Automower?
No, anybody can use Automower! The robot mower is very light compared to conventional lawn mowers, weighing only 15 to 30 pounds. And the control panel is intuitive to operate. Once in use, the Automower can be left alone to do its job.
Is Automower noisy?
Not at all. The sound level of the Automower is very low, ranging from 69 dB(A) to as little as 58 dB(A), depending on the model. By contrast, the average level of normal mowers is between 95 and 100 dB(A) of noise.
Are boundary wire and guide wire the same wire?
Yes, the same wire is used to set up both the boundary wire perimeter and guide wire path.
How do I start and stop Automower?
To start Automower, turn on the main switch, press the START button, and close the keypad hatch. To stop it, press the large STOP button. You can also start & stop Automower from your Automower Connect App.
Do I need to bury the wire?
No. The wire can be stapled on top of the ground and will disappear into the grass after a few weeks. A good tip is to cut the grass short prior to install.

Customers are mixed about the quality of the lawn mower. Some mention that it does a perfect job of mowing with zero noise, while others say that it's a complete waste of money. Over the first few weeks, there were growing pains. I used my edger to bury the boundary wire. I ran the boundary wire across my driveway through expansion joints. Used a bit of silicone to make sure it stays in joint. Initially I ran wire around everything (to include small ornamental trees and flower bed islands. In later removed that wire as it caused the mower to get lost (think it was boxed in) That helped tremendously. I kept waiting for the map to generate of the mowing area. I read it would take 50 hours to generate map. Mine took 22 hours. Once the map was generated, I turned off the GPS assisted navigation and created two zones. I told the mower to travel the boundary wire a certain distance in each zone and then to start mowing. I also told it what % of the total mowing time to work each zone. Since then, it has been kicking a$$ and taking names . Only problem I’ve had was a utility worker picking it up a few days ago while he was marking utility line with spray paint. I got him on security camera picking it up and looking at it. It started flashing headlights and making the shrieking alarm sound and he set it down fast and walked away. Hahahaha. I just reset the error via my app while I was in Los Angeles. ( The mower was at home in Louisiana).
Only cons I can think of are no striping. (It mows randomly, so you have to give it enough time to randomly cover entire work area) on occasion it says charge dock is blocked when trying to return for charging. The charger is not blocked however. I just use app and tap reset error . It has returned to dock every time after that .
Overall, absolutely love it.
I purchased a Friendly Robotics Robomower through Amazon almost exactly 20 years ago. I loved it, but after moving 4 years later it wasn't suited for my new lawn.
So, about 5 weeks ago, I decided to try robotic lawn mowing again. I purchased the Husqvarna 115 through Amazon and found that it just wouldn't work. It got lost and could never find it's way back to the charger. Because I went through the painstaking process of putting down my perimeter wire and guide wire, I decided to try again with the 415x because it has GPS and creates a virtual map.
Let's start with the perimeter and guide wires. It's a complete pain to get these wires in place. It takes a very long time to do it right, although I feel it was time well spent. One great thing is they send you a ton of wire and pegs. I had actually ordered extra fearing they might not include enough, but I was able to return the extras I purchased. Kudos to Husqvarna for including what was needed.
Since my yard has two very narrow choke points, it was crucial to install the guide wire. I wish the 415 was set up to accommodate 2 guide wires. I'll explain why later.
Now, let's talk about mowing. My old Robomower mowed like a traditional mower. When the grass got long, you sent it out to mow.
Husqvarna uses a different philosophy. Instead of mowing the grass when it needs it, the Husqvarna moves all the time cutting a tiny bit of the grass (a slight trim) each time it deploys throughout the day. Each day, my mower starts mowing at 10:30 am and stops at 10 pm each night, rain (as you see in the video) or shine.
One cool thing, to me at least, is there are no mower lines because it drives randomly (covered in a moment) around the yard as it mowes.
Because it mowes continually only cutting a tiny amount off the top, the yard pretty much looks always even and well manicured. My neighbors say it looks fantastic.
Instead of using blades like most people would think of, Husqvarna mowers have a disc with 3 little tiny blades which can rotate if they hit something, preventing damage. I have included a photo of the extra blades that come with it. It's actually a pretty cool system. The one caveat is that the blades need to be replaced fairly often. In my case, I'm guessing the blades will need to be replaced every 4 to 6 weeks. It's easy to do and will take 5 minutes and just a screwdriver, but still it's maintenance that is required and an ongoing cost.
Keep in mind, you will also need to mow your yard right before you deploy the mower. I intentionally left one spot not freshly mowed to see what would happen, and the Automower got stuck. I had to mow that section with my regular mower.
Don't freak out as you see the mower randomly driving around as it cuts thinking it will never cut all the grass. I learned this from my Robomower. I almost immediately returned it when I saw it mowing the first time thinking it would never get everything. Patience, it will.
When setting up the system, it's important to place the base properly. You don't want the mower having to burn too much time and battery returning to the dock.
I built a "barn" for my base to keep the sun and rain off of it as much as possible (see photo). You also have to consider power and the fact that the power block needs to be somewhat protected from the elements. The nice thing is they include a 30 foot extension wire from the power block to the base.
The virtual map. It will take about a weeks worth of mowing every day for your virtual map to be created. The map won't ever be perfect, and it doesn't need to be. Don't fret that it doesn't show straight lines following your perimeter wire.
My mower has been running for two weeks now. It has only been unable to locate the base twice so far, but that was the first day before it had much time to learn my yard. To date, my yard looks really good and the Automower has been doing great.
The mower is weather resistant and mowes in the rain, as you can see in my video.
Ok, time for the other stuff.
My yard is kind of split into two sections with the mower base in the center. One "half" uses the guide wire because the mower has to navigate through 2 choke points. If you look at my map you can figure it out.
The guide wire always allows the Automower to navigate through the choke points without issue. It also allows the mower to quickly return to base. The choke points stay well mowed.
The Automower uses 3 ways to find it's way back to its base: the guide wire, the perimeter wire and a radio signal.
The guide wire works the absolute best. I don't believe the radio signal works at all. The perimeter wire works, but it's highly inefficient, in terms of helping the mower find it's way back to the charger. IMHO, the mower spends too much time and battery on the other half of my lawn to get home. I wish I could have a secondary guide wire that would allow a more efficient way home on my other half of the yard.
Mowing height. The Automower's highest/tallest setting is equal to my EGO push mowers lowest setting, so my grass is cut pretty short.
Because I live in a hot climate with St Augustine grass, I hope this doesn't create a problem once summer arrives. Luckily, I will have plenty of time for my grass to hopefully adapt to being shorter.
St Augestein grass is also very thick. The mower kept getting stuck at first until I mowed the grass a second time on the lowest setting for my push mower. I do fear that my grass may grow too fast when summer gets here and create traps for the mower. We shall see.
I actually schedule my mower to not start mowing until 10:30 am to give my grass time to dry out and not be slick. Husqvarna sells a traction kit with better tires, but they aren't available in the US yet.
The app has a ton of features and controls allowing you to fine tune your mower for your yard.
One minor complaint I have is that you can't specify mowing hours for each day. Instead, you select a single mowing time block and either apply it to a day or not have it mow at all on that day. You can't say to mow from noon to midnight on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday and then 10 to 10 on the other days. Hopefully they change this in the future.
I highly recommend watching the installation videos prior to putting down wires or selecting your dock spot.
I did have to go back and move the permineter wire in one area the mower got stuck in twice. It was a narrow area with an uneven slope.
Keep in mind you will still need to trim along many edges, and in my case, even manually mow a couple of small spots. It's also possible that I may have to mow the entire yard in some situations. If I have a weeks worth of rain that keeps the growing grass laying down, a dry day might have the grass stand up and be too tall for the mower to make it through. I'll only know if this is or isn't the case over time.
When the rain is really bad, I will probably tell my mower to stay on the charging station under cover until I tell it to continue. You can see my photo of that situation which is happening right now as the rain has drastically increased.
Because the Automower uses Bluetooth for communicating, you essentially have no control if you aren't home and within BT range. I really wish the Automower was wifi enabled. At this price point, it really should be.
I promise I'll be doing at least one update to this review once summer arrives. I'm guessing I'll update it 3 or 4 more times over the next two years.
At this moment of it running for just over 2 weeks, I'm glad I made the purchase.

My lawn is virtually completely flat. Customer support is horrible! They initially told me to bring it to a local repair shop. After over a month of leaving un-returned voice mails with the local repair shop, and total non-responsive emails to Husqvarna and numerous calls on hold for over a month, I was finally able to get through to someone on a call. Husqvarna finally offered to have me send in for repair. I got the mower back and nothing was done to it - it had the exact same errors! I've calculated >$50k we've spent on Husqvarna products over the years and always thought they had stellar products, but this one changed my mind. I will never buy another Husqvarna product. They aren't what they used to be. Supposedly this item has a 3 year warranty and my product is just over 1 year old and they aren't doing anything about it. I'm out almost $2,000!
