6 Very Difficult Job Interview Questions Answered

3/12/2024
Every week, I meet individually with 15-18 people to help them with their job searches, interviews, and salary negotiations. Inevitably, I get questions such as… “Coach, I had this interview. The recruiter talked the entire time. Didn’t ask me a single question. What should I have done?” “Andy, the interviewer started the interview with ‘What questions do you have for me?’ and I wasn’t sure what to do! Why would they do that?” “How should I answer a question like, ‘Why shouldn’t we hire you?’” You get the idea. Stomach turning. No more. Let’s put these and other odd situations to bed once and for all! If you'd like to build a great career and lead a rewarding life, check out some of these other places where I share my teachings: 1. How to Prevent Burnout and Fatigue When Achieving Big Goals

3/5/2024
Many want it. The good life. The few. They want the great life. The rest. What’s left. You guessed it. They pursue heights so high most people dismiss them as unattainable. Whichever group you’re in, I know you’ll eventually pursue some personal Mount Everest. You know the one I’m talking about. The one that, somewhere along the climb, makes you question your choices. Whether it’s a project that takes a week that seems like “the longest week ever” or 20 years to pursue your life’s dream, you’re gonna encounter the “B” word. If you haven’t encountered the B word, you’re probably settling. Ouch. True. Burnout happens. Ask anyone who’s pursued a worthy dream. Burnout especially happens during the month of March. Why March? Seems like such a nice month, doesn’t it? People generally set lofty goals during January. (Fairly obvi.) Some quit before the month is over. Some make it until February before they throw in the towel. If you’re still hanging on in March… You guessed it. Fatigue sets in. Andy Sunshine is here to tell you, “No shortcut ever gave you what you deserved nor ever will.” The long and worthy road is filled with a few…”Hang on. I gotta catch my breaths.” I want to help you make sure you get what you deserve, so I’m giving you a bit of my formula on how I manage to “enjoy the doing” during the lengthy pursuits of my biggest goals. Just in time to save you from the March burnout. Let’s roll. And keep rolling… If you'd like to build a great career and lead a rewarding life, check out some of these other places where I share my teachings: 1. How You Write Your Resume Changes the Questions the Interviewer Asks You!

2/27/2024
Today, I’m dropping one of those podcasts that was impossible to title properly to encapsulate the full impact of the resume writing and interviewing tips and the relationship between the two. It teaches how your résumé affects what questions a job interviewer will ask you. You’ll also be able to immediately detect, based on the questions the interviewer is asking, whether you’re crushing it or digging yourself out of a hole. Of course, if you listen, you’ll be able to avoid that entire “hole” thing altogether. So much goodness in less than six minutes! How to Build Your Career Development Plan Step by Step

2/13/2024
I spent every single day between December 3rd, 2022 and May 30th, 2023 working on something that really matters me—writing a book that’ll help you achieve a level of career attainment and satisfaction that matches your abilities. Of course, you didn’t know I was doing that. And, you won’t be able to hold my little beauty until August 6, 2024. (You can, however, pre-order it here!) Even so, that doesn’t mean we can’t do some sneak previewing between now and then. See, my two least favorite words in any language are “unrealized potential.” It literally hurt me to type them. The sad fact is most people (at least most I’ve ever met) spend their entire careers in jobs well below their talent level. Might you be? Why do you think this is? My opinion is “professional growth” is a maze. Honestly. Have you ever felt lost, unsure of which skills to prioritize, or how to chart your career path effectively? These are common challenges many people face, resulting in unrealized potential (ouch, again) and missed opportunities. In our professional, that is, post-academic world, traditional guidance is scarce and we’re left to figure it out on our own. It’s helpful to have an experienced professor-like mentor who comes equipped with a structured syllabus of the most-impactful professional skills and sequenced lessons to help you navigate the intricacies of career development. One that can help you craft and implement your personalized, effective, strategic career growth plan. (This would be moi if that wasn’t obvi.) Pause for a second. Humor me. Can you imagine a future where your career aligns perfectly with your abilities? One where you consistently achieve success and satisfaction? Like virtually everything in our world today, it’s only a click away… If you'd like to build a great career and lead a rewarding life, check out some of these other places where I share my teachings: 1. 5 Tips to Achieve Your Goals in 2024

1/30/2024
It’s still January, which means technically I’m trending if I talk about goal setting. Are you achieving yours? Goals that is? I’m not really a goal-setter per se, as much as I strive to be an accomplish-er. And, I guess now that I’ve written that previous sentence and am too lazy to go back and change it, I’ll just correct it here... I have never arrived as much as I am always “on arrival.” I don’t really accomplish, as much as I enjoy. The joy is in the doing I like to say. Sure, I touchdown from time to time. Some might misconstrue my pitstops as accomplishments. But I strive to live in a state of progression. Nothing is ever the destination. Job Search Obstacles Preventing You From Success

12/19/2023
Happy Tuesday. You know what makes me sad? Podcast video titles. Lemme tell ya why. I have a podcast for you today. It’s a beauty (I think). I needed to attach a title to it because that’s a law in podcastland. I really wish I had unlimited characters and could give you a full brief about what’s in store for you when you click that link. The title I chose was Job Search Obstacles Preventing You from Success. It is accurate. Technically. What I share is an obstacle that prevents you from getting everything you want out of your job search. What I really wanted to title it was… Andy’s Surefire Method to Show You How Awesome You Are and How Much Meaning Your Life Has and How If You Look at the World This Way You Will Never Have a Sad Day for the Rest of Your Life. That’s really what the video is about. Yes, I have a fabulous story about job searching and Susan and how I transformed her interpretation of an assignment she had developing a spreadsheet. To her, she thought her work activity sounded mundane. To me, it sounded like she did something important that helped (literally) thousands of music artists get accurately paid (literally again) millions of dollars they were not properly receiving on time or at all. Not to be fussy, but I liked my interpretation a wee bit better. Maybe you walk through life this way…thinking you don’t matter much? Or, thinking what you do doesn’t matter much? Here, please try on my sweet rose-colored glasses so you can see what I see… If you'd like to build a great career and lead a rewarding life, check out some of these other places where I share my teachings: 1. Remember This to Overcome Hesitation During Your Job Search

12/12/2023
“An object in motion is easier to redirect than a stationary one.” I’m sure I made up that quote sometime in my teens during one of my endless semesters of physics. I’m sure I’m not the first person to have that thought. I’m also sure it’s the end of the year. That means many job-seekers are either tired of searching or hesitating or reluctant to get moving until the new year. I just can’t have that, so I want to continue my little run of job-search-motivation to help with your momentum. Today, I’m serving up an analogy from my life to help you get charged, maintain your focus, not worry about the future, and a bunch of other really cool messages I managed to stuff into 309 seconds. For the rest of your life, remember… When you’re doing something, focus on the shout. When you’re reflecting, focus on the echo. When you make a mistake, make it an error of commission not omission. And, for the love of all that is holy, whenever you’re not sure, hit the damn send button and sort it out later. It’s really the “sorting” you’re working for… If you'd like to build a great career and lead a rewarding life, check out some of these other places where I share my teachings: 1. 5 Ways to Get Paid More When Interviewing

10/31/2023
Expected salary is ridiculous. Budgeted salary…sillier still. Just like advertised salary, unadvertised salary, and the-salary-we-hope-to-pay salary. How do I know this? Let’s see... Negotiated over 600 employment agreements and salaries as an executive recruiter. Wait. There’s more. Of the more-than 3,000 people I’ve personally coached as an international career coach, I’ll estimate, conservatively, 25% of them needed negotiation help. That’s…let me carry the…wait, is that grouping, carrying, or borrowing now? Either way, roughly 750 more. Can we agree on over 1,000 data points (even though it’s over 1,300)? Cool. Let’s say, for the sake of email argument, you’ll play along. Why do we even have budgeted salaries? Why ask about expected salaries? Well, companies and people think this saves time. I think it helps you miss opportunities as an employer or employee. What should YOU do instead of focusing on these expectations when you enter an interview process as a job candidate? The Last-Resort Salary Negotiation Tactic

10/17/2023
Sometimes you (think you’ve) hit a wall. There’s a person you’re speaking to and they just don’t want to pay you any more salary. Before you come to my Live Office Hours show and ask me what to do, I want you to ask yourself a question… “Can this person actually approve more compensation for me?” Essentially, is this someone who can say “No,” but cannot say “Yes?” If it is, don’t argue. It’s time for something else. Like a great prizefighter, let’s hit them with a left jab so they need some smelling salt from their trainer. I’ll stop with the boxer jokes now because, after all, we don’t want to hurt anyone. At least not yet. Ha ha. What you (actually) need to determine is whether they can and will run it up the flagpole so to speak. This might be a recruiter or HR person turning to a hiring official to make a decision. It might be the hiring officially turning to a more senior executive. Effectively, I want you to test whether you’ll hit an actual wall or whether there’s a bit more dough stuffed in the mattress. Listen to learn how. If you'd like to build a great career and lead a rewarding life, check out some of these other places where I share my teachings: 1.
