The BBC Gladiators micro:bit competition is now closed and no longer accepting entries. Thank you for taking part and sending in your fantastic designs. Teachers can still access the Inventor Workshop resources below to bring Gladiators fun to their classroom.

Ever wanted to be an inventor? Work as a class to learn about how the micro:bit works, researching and drawing design ideas, and collaborating to improve an idea.

These activities will guide you towards a valid competition entry once completed. Click the links below to be taken to the lesson plans and student worksheets.

Curriculum covered

England: Design and Technology (KS2)

Pupils should be taught to:

  • Use research and develop design criteria to inform the design of innovative, functional, and appealing products that are fit for purpose, aimed at particular individuals or groups.
  • Generate, develop, model, and communicate ideas through discussion, annotated sketches, cross-sectional and exploded diagrams, prototypes, pattern pieces and computer-aided design.
  • Evaluate their ideas and products against their own design criteria and consider the views of others to improve their work.

Scotland: Technologies (Second Level)

  • TCH 2-05a: Investigate how product design has been influenced by changing lifestyles.
  • TCH 2-11a: Use graphic techniques, manually and digitally, to communicate ideas, experimenting with shape, colour, and texture.
  • TCH 2-12a: I can extend knowledge and understanding of engineering disciplines to create solutions.

Wales: Curriculum for Wales (Progression Step 3)

  • I can creatively respond to the needs and wants of the user, based on the context and on the information collected.
  • I can identify and consider factors when developing design proposals.
  • I can use design communication methods to develop and present ideas and respond to feedback.
  • I can consider how my design proposals will solve problems and how this may affect the environment.
  • I can use design thinking to test and refine my design decisions without fear of failure.

Northern Ireland: The World Around Us (KS2)

  • Pupils will be able to understand how knowledge in science supports technological inventions.
  • Develop ideas and make models using labelled diagrams.
