This is the main reason I picked this as it is an OLED screen, which is great for movies. It is past the return date. We’ll see what the seller does to try to fix this issue.
Update 3-13-24
Contacted seller but they never got back to me.
Contacted Amazon and they said I will have to go through the manufacturer.
If you want to use this laptop at the same time of trying to use it forget it, the screen will keep turning off almost every minute like clockwork.
Now I see why it was discounted at this price of almost 50% off.
It is not even worth the three hundred and something I paid for it.
It would have been nice to have had someone get back to me with a fix to the issue but even the latest windows updates don’t work.
Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2023
- the removable stand and keyboard are not great.
TL;DR - This isn't for me, it really isn't what I was looking for. I wish I had returned it. I bought this to entertain my children on a 12+ hour flight by playing movies and light internet usage. There are other devices out there at this price point that may not have the same screen but have 10x better performance. If, in 2023, you want a device that can kind of do one thing at a time and live in a colder climate then this might be fore you. But probably not.
The good: The display is gorgeous. It is bright, vibrant and shows a great range of colors. And I like that there is a headphone jack. That's about all for the good.
The bad: It's uncomfortable in the lap. Between the stand and the keyboard this is designed to be on a flat surface. First, the keyboard, is flimsy. If you don't have it on a flat, stable surface it is easy to flex and even a little bit of flex will trigger the trackpad and register a click. The trackpad is WAY too sensitive. Using it to scroll through youtube is like walking through a mine field. Also, the functions on the arrow keys do not work at all.
The stand digs into your lap and can not keep it's position for very long. You have to adjust it constantly and doing that with one hand is akin to juggling goslings. The magnets do not keep it in place very well during adjustment. You need one hand to hold the stand in place and the other to adjust it. You also have to hope you don't accidentally hit the upper right corner of the screen and close whatever you have open while you're adjusting the stand. Very poor design.
There are no magnets to keep the keyboard closed, it just flaps around.
You can remove the keyboard but then the device itself digs into your lap. Additionally, after about an hour of use, it starts to get very warm in the lower left corner. Which radiates to your leg. I can not imagine using this as a tablet in the hands as the heat makes it uncomfortable to hold for any period of time. There is more about the heat issue later.
Windows 11 S(ucks) is the furthest thing from evolution in home computing. It is a definite step backwards and a major concern for privacy. Granted, this device is not a power house, more on that later, but limiting it to only the Microsoft store is incredibly controlling. I have disable S mode and can talk fully about the device's performance.
The ugly: Performance is terrible, and as it gets hot it gets worse. The device is very slow to respond, even when cool. If you click, or tap, on the status bar to check sound, wifi, or battery, it will take nearly two seconds to respond. The RAM is tied into everything, including the USB C controller. And 4GB is not enough to handle everything that is going on. When I used a chromium (not chrome) based browser it could not handle two tabs open at a time. It had to unload the dormant tab in order to save RAM. And that's with only a browser open. With notepad, snipping tool, task manager, and Firefox open to its default tab 83% of the RAM was taken up (picture). No page was even loaded yet. I did load steam and used the vivobook to play one mobile style game and it did so poorly. I wasn't trying to play Farcry, but a simple mobile game and it constantly sputtered and skipped. And the temperature ramped up quickly making everything so much slower.
I did LibreOffice on this machine and it wasn't worth it. Even the word processor took up 85% of the RAM with a blank page. I didn't try to do advance document generation (graphics, fancy editing, and the like). If you're not doing that then just load Notepad++.
The IO is... okay for a device this size. There is a headphone jack, mini SD card slot, and two USB C ports. The two USB C ports need help, one is used for charging leaving one open. Attempting to use a USB C hub was not a good experience, I constantly got a warning that the devices may not be receiving enough power. I was using it with the hub being used as a charging pass-through. I played a movie from an external USB drive directly plugged into the USB C port and it would stutter and the speakers would crackle because the port has no buffer. It got worse as the device got warmer.
Bottom line: My wife has an eight year old Surface that runs circles around the Vivobook in all aspects except the screen and battery. Less heat, more RAM, more storage, way better performance. Doing more than one thing at a time is just not a fun prospect with this device. This is 2023 and a device like this shouldn't even exist at this price point. There are better devices out there, this was a huge strike-out by Asus.
