I was looking for writings on finding great startup ideas since we’re thinking through new actions for Inari (YC S23) so I compiled my favorite quotes: Solve your own problems 🛠️ "The way to get startup ideas is not to try to think of startup ideas. Look for problems, preferably problems you have yourself. The best startup ideas tend to have three things in common: they're something the founders themselves want, that they themselves can build, and that few others realize are worth doing." 99 out of 100 people would consider me stupid. 6 weeks ago i was offered a salary package for 440,000 USD + benefits to lead a growth stage focused VC fund that helps takes companies to IPO stage. Sounds great right, travel the world, all expenses paid, write checks and take profits. Unfortunately, i said NO. I am sharing a very dark side of my life here today with my #linkedinfam It's been almost 13 years since i have been bit by an entrepreneurial bug. It's taught me to be resilient, headstrong, and to follow my dreams. Every project that i tried to build, successfully built or moved on after it was built was something close to my heart and i would consider it an expression of life, a meaningful experience to look upon, a chapter in my story. In these years of being a startup founder/builder i have been broken countless times, when i had no money, not even enough to eat properly or rent a house. This earlier got me anxious or go into depressive states. Many a times, i looked up to mentors in those times and all they had to offer, looking at me as a resource, was a job to make me stable. What the last two times once in 2015 and once in 2018 taught me that i was selling off or shorting my dreams by not actively pursuing it. So i used to learn in those times, the disciplines that i was certainly weak at, rebuild myself internally and try again. Everytime i built, a reach a bit further in my inner dream state, making me more determined that the pursuit is all what matters. Today since the last few months i again went on the journey towards the dream a bit more further. Late nights, routine all over the place managing global timezones of digital workforce, managing expectations, putting everything on the line. It definitely should not be underestimated the pains and sufferings a solo founder must take. But this time something changed, i was a bit more at ease in my mind. I had the love of my life beside me, turning the suffering into a blissful experience, i had a few colleagues & friends who never doubted my intention and gave their experience, time and effort to join my dream. An offer on the table that takes away this was not something i would again make the mistake even if i have to suffer a bit more now. My mentor who offered me this job said "Aby, you are taking unnecessary stress and pain, what will you be able to change? There is no point, just relax and start again. Forget everything that has happened till now, from 1st when you come to the office, you are Aby 2.0" i laughed and said "Sure", thinking inside why to live a life where you have to forget a past. Following the dream should not be a trauma to founders, it should be an experience of a lifetime. I remembered then about a short story, a novella if you must, back in 2016-2017 called Dreams for Sale where Alex, the main protagonist sells his dream project for a million dollars, only to find they bought it to take out the competition. Dreams are not for Sale!
