understanding different types of foundationMany people have at least a basic understanding, or at least a general concept, of what a foundation is. However, many people don’t know much beyond that. The truth is that each foundation repair job can be unique and drastically different from any other. When dealing with foundation repairs and maintenance, is even important to note that there are several different types of foundations that are fairly common depending on the type of home, the area of the home is located in, and the type of soil that is common in that region. Different soil types, and their propensity for shifting, will often determine what type of foundations are most common in an area.

Even at a basic level, of foundation repair specialist needs to be prepared to deal with concrete slab, pier & beam, and mobile home foundations. All three of these are very different in organization and set up, and each one has its advantages, disadvantages, and unique characteristics that make them unique compared to other types of foundations.

Concrete slab is perhaps the most common type of building foundation set up in most areas in the United States, and refers to the practice of setting a solid concrete slab upon which the rest of the house or building will be built upon. Normally this means the concrete to will actually be set right upon the ground, forming the absolute bottom floor of a basement.

Sometimes the slab will also be supported on foundations that keep it from resting 100% on the subsoil. In certain situations the theory is that this will prevent the ground from shifting around the full foundation.

Another common type of foundation is the pier & beam foundation. This set up involves several concrete tubes and slabs set directly into the soil, as well as an exterior beam, and then beams often made of steel connect the concrete to the subflooring and outer walls. The benefits to this style is a clear crawl space for workers, which make repairs extremely easy. Floors are also generally nicer, because they’re not resting directly on hard concrete.

The negative side of the set up can be cold floors, as well as having the foundation more open to being damaged by external sources.

Finally, mobile home foundations come in both permanent foundation setups, as well as less permanent setups. The wide variety of different potential foundations means that you will want to make sure you get a professional specialists who knows how to deal with your specific foundation.

There are many different subsets and different styles that fall under each of those individual foundation types.
