It was great to catch up with my former boss and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. We talked through his journey from growing up a shy kid in Detroit to becoming the CEO of one of the world's largest tech companies, and current owner of the LA Clippers. • Reduce. Replenish. Access. Innovation. Policy. Welcome to the water issue of Sustainably Speaking.💧 This month features insights from Microsoft’s CSO Melanie Nakagawa and our Global Water Lead, Eliza Roberts. Eliza dives into the critical challenges around water sustainability and highlights AI-powered innovations driving change worldwide. She touches on water’s role in datacenters, agriculture and more. She also covers the important collaborations with 80+ global water access and replenishment projects -- you can explore the scale and transformative impact of these efforts on a new interactive map. These initiatives have made a life-changing impact by providing clean water and sanitation to more than 1.5 million people, many of whom are women living below the poverty line. • AI is transforming how nonprofits can drive impact—but access to AI tools and the skills to use them are key to making sure that everyone benefits from them.  At this year’s Global Nonprofit Leaders Summit, we welcomed 1000+ thought leaders––and over 4000 virtually––from across the nonprofit, technology, and funding sectors to share insights, learnings, and lessons on how AI can advance social good when used responsibly and effectively. Some standout takeaways: 🔹 Nonprofits are already doing amazing things with AI – organizations like Opportunity International who is using Azure AI to help farmers in Malawi improve their yields, as well as Operation Smile to improve patient care through Azure OpenAI and Fabric.  🔹Building technology coalitions: Bringing together boards, community members, and staff helps to enable broad diffusion and adoption of AI.   🔹 Leveraging AI for efficiency: Integrating AI and automation into their work is not only helping their staff but also the people they serve by maximizing their impact.  🔹 Ensuring organizational resilience: Investing in AI-driven strategies helps nonprofits to adapt and scale in a rapidly changing world.  This is just a snapshot of the powerful sessions that took place that included speakers Brad Smith, Dr. Laurie Santos, Mustafa Suleyman, Strive Masiyiwa, and Afua Bruce. We’re looking forward to seeing how these conversations turn into action. Microsoft for Nonprofits

  • Water is essential for datacenter operations as it prevents the silicon chips—the basic building blocks of cloud and AI computing—from overheating. As part of our goal to become water positive by 2030, we’re working to reduce water use in our datacenters by driving efficiency, increasing recycling, and investing in innovation. Even as our datacenter infrastructure expands, we’ve been able to significantly reduce how much water our datacenters use per kilowatt of power. From our first generation of owned datacenters in the early 2000s to our current generation in 2023, we have reduced our water intensity (water consumed per kilowatt-hour) by over 80%. Here’s how we’re reducing water use at our datacenters: 💧Conserving water at every stage of the operations ⛄Expanding cooling technologies to reduce datacenter water use 💵Investing in the next generation of water-saving datacenter designs Learn more about our progress: https://msft.it/6046qWN0e

  • As we celebrate 50 years, the Microsoft employee giving program continues to inspire change with record-breaking contributions that support local causes and help communities thrive across Washington State and beyond. ➡️ In 2024 alone, employees donated $88 million and volunteered an all-time high of more than 460,000 hours, benefiting 4,900 Washington State nonprofits. ➡️ Over the lifetime of the program, employees have donated more than $1.3 billion and volunteered nearly 6 million hours to support nonprofits across Washington. ➡️ Our employees, past and present, have donated over $3 billion since our first Give campaign and provided the equivalent of 1,277 years of volunteering to 36,000 organizations globally. We’re incredibly grateful for the collective impact our partners, nonprofit organizations, and employees have made over the past five decades. • Lake Xochimilco is vital for traditional agricultural practices and is home to unique wildlife. Unfortunately, pollution and excessive water extraction have taken a toll on this historic wetland. The good news is efforts are underway to restore Lake Xochimilco's ecosystem. Supported by Microsoft, Conservation International is teaming up with local partners to clean up the water and bring back biodiversity. It's all about promoting sustainable farming practices to ensure the long-term health of this essential ecosystem. This effort is a win for both supporting ecology and the community's well-being. Full restoration of Lake Xochimilco could provide up to 15-20% of Mexico City's produce needs. Learn more about restoring the traditional wetlands of Xochimilco https://msft.it/6042qiSSg

    • Saving the wetlands of Mexico’s Lake Xochimilco
Microsoft and Conservation International collaborate to improve water quality and restore biodiversity.
    • The Xochimilco ecosystem represents the last remaining segment of an ancient lagoon system renowned for its canals and chinampas, or floating agricultural islands.
    • The axolotl, an amphibian exclusive to Xochimilco, has experienced a critical decline due to habitat destruction, pollution, and the introduction of invasive species. Only an estimated 50-1,000 of these species remain in the wild.
    • Conservation International and local partners are restoring Lake Xochimilco wetlands by:

Working with farmers to use sustainable farming practices
Planting native species
Installing biofilter systems to improve water quality

Restoring the Lake Xochimilco ecosystem will not only improve water quality, but it could also supply up to 25% of the produce consumed by Mexico City.
  • AI promises to drive innovation and economic growth. That will require investments in AI infrastructure, but to do that, the United States needs more electricity and electricians, as Brad Smith writes in Fox Business Network.   Microsoft's investments in infrastructure across states like Wisconsin, Washington, Iowa, and Texas have highlighted a significant labor shortage. To meet the growing demand, we estimate that the United States will need to train half a million new electricians over the next decade. Revitalizing industrial arts in high schools and investing in skilling apprenticeship programs at community colleges to prepare students for careers in fields like electrical work will all be essential for the future of American AI and innovation.
