  • Microsoft is on a mission to minimize waste. From making products easier to repair and boosting server reuse to eliminating single-use plastics packaging, we’re driving meaningful change. Our circular economy policy brief outlines 9 key principles in 3 areas to advance effective public policies to tackle electronic waste, scale recovery systems, and inspire smarter, eco-friendly designs. By breathing new life into materials and reimagining product designs, we’re living the values of reduce, reuse, and recover. https://msft.it/6044SPxI0

    • Reducing waste by advancing a circular economy for electronics

Microsoft is committed to an increasingly circular approach to materials management as we work to achieve zero waste.

We’re sharing three areas for advancing effective public policies to scale circular markets and reduce electronic waste.

How: Advance eco-design of products
Why:Today, many products are not designed for material reduction, recyclability, and repair.

How: Increase the availability of recycled materials
Why: The lack of available recycled materials and poor visibility into sourcing material are key challenges.

How: Scale system-wide recovery, sorting, and recycling
Why: Current requirements complicate sorting products at end-of-life, expanding repair opportunities and investing in recycling infrastructure.

  • In rural West Virginia, unreliable transportation often makes healthcare hard to reach—especially for the more than 250,000 residents living with diabetes, which if untreated can lead to long-term vision loss known as Diabetic Retinopathy. That’s why Dr. Sunil Gupta founded Intelligent Retinal Imaging Systems - IRIS to help eliminate preventable blindness through technology. With support from Microsoft Azure AI tools and computing power, IRIS enables healthcare providers to capture and analyze digital retinal images—no specialists or expensive equipment required. This AI-powered approach is expanding access to care for underserved communities, scaling their approach to process 40,000 exams per month and helping identify thousands at risk of vision loss early, when it matters most. • We’re constantly working towards building a circular economy. To reach our goal of zero waste by 2030, Microsoft is committed to doing our part to optimize resource use, strengthen supply chains, and reduce costs. This starts with creating devices designed for a circular future. • Only 7.2% of the 100 billion tons of materials the world consumes every year are cycled back into the economy. This Earth Day, we’re dedicating a special edition of Sustainably Speaking to our approach to materials and waste and how Microsoft is leading the charge towards zero waste by 2030. 🚮 Our CSO Melanie Nakagawa shares how we’re working towards building a circular economy and the progress we’ve made on reaching a number of our zero waste milestones in 2024, ahead of schedule. 🔁 Surpassing our goal of recycling and reusing 90% of servers and components. With support of our Circular Centers, we ensured that only material that was truly reused or recycled—not just collected—was counted toward our goal. 🏗️Diverting 85.3% of construction and demolition waste from landfills and incinerators as we drive towards zero waste in our operations and buildings. Our Circular Economy Lead, Alessandra Pistoia breaks down our strategy for reducing, reusing, and recovering materials across the company to meet our zero waste goals and how we're committed to minimizing waste by prioritizing waste prevention first, then reusing, recovering, and recirculating materials back into supply chains. Chief Sustainability Officer @ Microsoft | Combining technology, business, and policy for change

We set an ambitious goal for 2025 as part of our journey to be zero waste: reusing and recycling 90% of our servers and components. I’m incredibly proud to share that we’ve not only met but also exceeded this goal a full year ahead of schedule, achieving a 90.9% reuse and recycling rate in 2024. This milestone reflects our dedication and is just one piece of reaching our goal of zero waste by 2030.  What stands out most to me about this achievement is the creativity and innovation that made this possible. Through material recovery—extracting valuable components from discarded products and putting them to work in new ways, like memory chips and motherboards—we’re not just reducing waste, we’re conserving resources and lowering emissions. It’s proof that circularity is both possible and impactful, and can benefit the triple bottom line of people, planet, profit. Scaling these practices across all our operations is our next step, and I’m inspired by the support of our many partners as we continue transforming our approach to waste management. Together, we’re creating lasting impact and shaping a brighter, more sustainable future.
